Writing Research

What are the Contributions of Writing Research to the Science of Reading?

Reading and writing instruction have a history of shared and separate components. We talk about this history and the most current research on how classrooms that use the science of reading to inform their literacy instruction can incorporate writing to improve reading, writing, and content area outcomes. See issue 1 of 2023 in The Reading League Journal for the article written by Dr. Truckenmiller and doctoral student, Brennan Chandler.

Writing Development Series for the Michigan Reading League

What drives student development in written expression? In this 5-part webinar series, Dr. Truckenmiller presents on overview of an empirically-derived heuristic (Dr. Young-Suk Kim’s Direct and Indirect Effects in Writing model) that can help educators learn and support the critical components of learning to write. The first webinar gives an overview of the model with Dr. Kim providing context. The remaining webinar go in-depth on instructing and assessing each part of the model.
